Question: You keep saying you don’t control the data and cannot change it, then why is there an option to “Hide this Crime”?
Answer: Yes indeed, we have no technical ability to make any changes to the Police UK database, and should you want such changes, you need to contact them directly.
However, our support team has been contacted on multiple occasions by people exhibiting varying levels of rudeness and aggression, demanding—sometimes in borderline harassing and threatening manners—that we remove a particular crime marker from the map. In some cases, no amount of explaining in plain English about the impossibility of fulfilling such demands was successful. We, therefore, took the decision, for the sake of the mental wellbeing of our developers and support team, to introduce an option to hide crime markers.
How it works?
If you select a crime marker you don’t want to see on the map, you will have two options available:
• Hide for me
• Hide for everyone else (* as of February 2025 this is only available on iOS)
This is how each of these options works:
Hide for me
The unique identifier of the crime marker will be recorded on your phone and hidden from the map for your view only. You will not see it again. You cannot undo this, and we cannot undo this either—this action is final. Please bear in mind that if you delete and reinstall the app, the markers might reappear. If you have paid to hide the marker, this payment is non-refundable. If you delete and reinstall the app and the marker reappears, you will need to pay for this option again.
To summarise:
• The marker will only be hidden for you on your device and only until you uninstall the app.
• You will need to pay each time to hide the marker unless you are on the highest subscription plan.
• We cannot undo the hiding of the marker as this data is stored on your phone, and we have no access to it.
• This action does not delete the crime marker from the Police UK database or any other apps, websites, or mediums using Police UK data.
• You are in control of this feature and may hide as many markers as you wish.
Hide for everyone else
The unique identifier of the crime marker will be recorded in our cloud and it will be hidden from the map for you. You will not see it again. You cannot undo this—this action is final. Please bear in mind that free users of our app will still see the pin, but crime marker address and type of crime will be obscured and only premium users will see the details. We believe paying customers, premium users are entitled to full access to data with no exceptions.
To summarise:
• The marker will be hidden for you and any other iOS or Android app user on the free tier.
• Premium users of our app who pay a subscription fee will still see the marker.
• You will need to pay for hiding this marker.
• This action does not delete the crime marker from the Police UK database or any other apps, websites, or mediums using Police UK data.
• This feature is subject to a fair use policy. We reserve the right to unhide any hidden crime markers should we determine you are abusing this policy, and no refunds will be given.
These are premium features available on both iOS and Android* versions of the app. We charge for this feature, and the revenue generated is used to fund Headspace mental health subscriptions for our team and to maintain the servers required to support this functionality.
